Eco-watch & Heligan
The Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall is famed for the resurrection of a forgotten Victorian estate into a top tourist attraction. The Gardens lie within a 200-acre estate comprised of a wooded valley, grazed pasture and lakes that all support a wealth of wildlife.
Horsemoor Hide was built in 2001 as an indoor focal point where visitors could witness the secret lives of some of Heligan's wildlife, via a network of miniature cameras wired up to a series of large viewing screens. Eco-watch initially fitted the cameras inside a number of bird, owl and bat boxes, which were sited within the adjacent woodland.
Today, the Hide offers exclusive and innovatively produced experiences for the visitor of an ever-expanding range of wildlife that lives on the Heligan estate. Whatever time of year you choose to come to Heligan, visitor-controlled cameras offering close-up views of seasonal wildlife activity and a selection of edited images from activities recorded here previously are both available.
Habitat management throughout the wider estate include the arable field adjacent to the Horsemoor Hide and Orchard. These sustain a diversity of invertebrates and small mammals which in turn support our “star attractions”; barn owls, pipistrelle and greater horseshoe bats, and woodland mammals.
