South East Grid for Learning - The Bird Box Project

The Birdbox Project

The South East Grid for Learning (SEGfL) expanded a project established by eco-watch, Gatehouse Partnership and Hampshire Education to encourage three schools (King’s Furlong Infant School, Pennington County Infant School & Smanell and Enham) to share bird box data with each other via e-mail and video conferencing.

Eco-watch datalogger A teacher discovered eco-watch on the internet and asked us to help them set up a project whereby three schools at different locations would compare nest building material. Their aim was to integrate the story of the birds, the nest box camera itself and the technology it used as teaching aids in delivering ICT and science in the curriculum.
Blue Tits was done by a pupil at the school.

The schools decided on colour nest box camera kits that were connected to computers. The nestboxes were occupied with families of blue tits raising young. The images were uploaded and video-streamed to the website as well as distributed within the schools themselves.
